Do you know there are different types of urinary leakage/incontinence based on when the leakage is happening and/or what is causing the leak?
Let's take a deeper look into the types:
Stress urinary incontinence is defined as urinary leakage that occurs with a pressure change or activity such as coughing, laughing, sneezing or lifting, running, jumping.
Urinary urge incontinence is leakage that is associated with an urge or feeling of needing to urinate resulting in “not making it to the bathroom”.
Overflow incontinence is leakage that occurs as a result of the bladder involuntarily contracting when the bladder is overly full or hasn’t emptied appropriately and often occurs without observed cause or awareness.
Sometimes a person is only experiencing one type of leakage, but there are other times when a combination of the types of leakage can be present. When developing a plan of care to address incontinence, it is important to know which type/types are present to help determine which exercises will be most beneficial and which behavioral techniques can be added in addition to addressing the pelvic floor to more holistically treat the problem.
